I think this song is very difficult to mix. First I tried to make a dry treatment for this song. I couldn't make it work at all. In the end of this song the singer asks for the "Lion King" treatment for the vocals. So I gave it to him: wet and present. After that decision everything was much easier.

The vocal reverb was also inspired by Lefty Frizzell's "Long Black Veil".
Otherwise I was listening Ray Charles' modern recordings.

THanks for listening. You may be just right about the bass. I must check it someday. I made this mainly with headphones when children were sleeping. And I was struggling so much with drums, acoustic guitar and vocal sound to make one coherent mood for the song, that i may have forgotten to listen the bass totally.
