A pretty straight-forward funk drone. I took my primary key from the room mics for the drums and extended that into a larger space to get a good live feel. I also put a buss compressor on my stereo mix buss and mixed into that (something I do not often do), again for a more live feel. I think I got something nice and funky with a pulse and some drive.

Let me know what you think.

Shut Up And Play - The Morning After

There was some cleanup to do after reading comments and after a night to sleep on it. Tendered here are the morning after results.

I took a lot of heat for the reverb on the snare so I've addressed that by cleaning up the snare sound and slightly modifying the low pass on the reverb return. For the Hammond Haters out there I have smoothed out the level of the organ. I took a few pounds off the bass guitar to clarify it and the lead guitar was widened by detuning each mic by a few cents, one up, one down and placing it in a discreet reverb with a longer tail and rounder character. I hope you like the 'improvements'.

Having not listened for a while I stepped back into this mix with a fresher ear and took a new approach to the lead guitar, softening it but making it much bigger with the ensemble playing through the new lead sound effectively. I hope you like it. And as always, comments are appreciated.

Happy Mixing,
MITC
Love your version it has live stadium vibe with John lord featured on the hammond with the leslie speaker cranked up !
One very minor thing thing that jumps out is the snare reverb decay sounds like it could be a touch shorter or less 600-1k.

Great job Big Grin

Hi Mixinthecloud

Your sound making is wonderful
Especially, the sound of Hammond has a pleasing sound
I am looking forward to hearing your mix

Hey Don,
I'm curious. How do you know the names of the players on this piece?

On the snare decay, I am using a room reverb on an effects send which I am hitting from many channels including the kick, bass, Hammond, snare, stereo room mics, guitar 1 and lead guitar. I did vacillate on the low-pass filter I put on the reverb return trying my best to find the point where the reverb added the depth I was looking for the room/stage I was creating without being to hollow or too bright/reflective. I get the feeling you do not like to 'hear' reverb as an effect. Maybe the mids on the snare are too hot, which is a definite possibility. It is a thick snare in over-heads and room mics too. I think my point is you did not mention the reverb on anything other than the snare and being that everything shared the same reverb, it must be the snare which is the problem. BTW, the decay on the reverb is 587.6 ms.
Hi Mixinthecloud listening to (the morning after mix)I like it but I find that your keyboards are getting really ear piercing, thanks for sharing your mix.
I only can give a quick listen to the Morning After Mix. It generally feels pretty good. Would say the guitar feels a bit buried while the organ feels way too out front. I find the reverb on the drums to be a little much. Maybe its just the portion on the snare.
Sounds good! Listened the morning after version. Perhaps the kick room/reverb effect could come down a bit? It feels a bit synthetic compared to the rest of the mix. Still, sound very good. ^_^
Hi Mixinthecloud

I was listening the mix the morning after.

The batery is in a space reverb room very hard, the snare is too broke y the first time when is alone are good but in the mix with the other element it seems to me annoying (min 0:40) maybe could be fine with more medium.

The hammond are big, spectacular.

The guitar sound brilliant too, but when you have two simultaneus, the first stays hidden.

You could you break free compresion in the general.

Good job.
Like the vibe very spacious. The sound is very open and has a good balance. Like the mix good job
