Come think about it, recordings (drums or any sort) from those days were way less raw than they are today: rooms with a lot of character, analog tape and analog mixers made for a "album sound" without having to go loco with effects and processing.
Then in the 80's they just put reverb on everything and in the 00's it was all compressed to f$%&,
and now it feels as if we're pulling our hair to make things sound "like they used to"! Unless you're mixing "now" music, of course.
