Judders Living in the City - Judders - 05-12-2018
Mine sounds really mid-heavy and scratchy compared to the other mixes now. Listening to lots of mixes of the same song really confuses my ears!
A real treat to mix such great musicians recording live. All the recordings were nice too, especially the drums that sounded ready to go raw. I loved the bitter sweet lyrics too.
I went for a classic kind of vibe. Lots of dynamics and old school levels, so you'll have to turn up your monitors
I think I could still get the vocal a bit smoother after listening to the other mixes here.
EDIT: Added a second mix. Just took some high mids from the lead vox, guitars and overheads.

sounds great! maybe the cymbal whistles a bit on chorus. still, sounds very good and authentic. space, levels and panning are all just right. great mixing. ^_^

Yes, the high mids / low highs were a bit of a compromise in the choruses, as the lead Vox and BGV mic bleed was being used as a feature to add more energy to the them. It's a double-edged sword though! I'm sure I could fix it with enough time... but who's got that?!

Hi Judders, kudos for moving the guitar to the center for the solo so seamlessly!
Snare is the part that's out of place for me, being so raw that it feels unproduced in comparison with the other parts. It's too loud, which ironically makes the rhythm kit lose punch and very focused on the lowmids. I can't remember but it seems like it came in a top/bottom mics setup, so maybe it's all coming from too much bottom mic?
Everything else works great, very glued and natural, with a nice vintage feel.

I like to hear snare wires, and generally have more snare bottom than most people like to use, but you're right that it is still a bit loud. I did reduce it a fair amount fro where it was for most of the time I was mixing, but realised I didn't go quite far enough upon listening to it again this morning.
I liked the way the drums sounded like a late 70's recording right out of the gate so I wanted to keep them as close to the raw sounds as possible.

Come think about it, recordings (drums or any sort) from those days were way less raw than they are today: rooms with a lot of character, analog tape and analog mixers made for a "album sound" without having to go loco with effects and processing.
Then in the 80's they just put reverb on everything and in the 00's it was all compressed to f$%&,
and now it feels as if we're pulling our hair to make things sound "like they used to"! Unless you're mixing "now" music, of course.

Yeah, depends on the genre though. Plenty of drum trickery going on in the 70's in disco and pop.
The raw drum tracks reminded me of drum sounds of bands like Queen in that period.

Nice balance. Sounds good overall. Cymbals during the chorus parts have some annoying frequencies going on.
