Brennon Causey Mixing - 'Dead EnemiesV3'
#1
Had fun with this one! Smile

V2 - added some Effects and Automation, and balanced the eq of the tracks a little more ( I should probably make a 3rd version and sort out the low end to match the first version more)

V3 - Gave it a fresh mix Smile

The vocal sound is ACE - absolutely soars above the music.
100% makes the track, once the vocals come in, the whole mix makes sense.

Having said that, I kinda wish the intro (lead + acoustics) gripped me the way the whole band + vocal did.
TBH - when I heard the intro, I didn't have any idea the band + vocal was going to rock as hard as it did.
If there were some way to bridge the "this sounds really good" feeling from the start of the track to the first verse, that'd make it awesome for me.

I'm not sure exactly what would make it "work" - maybe a bit of EQ + compression on the acoustic guitars?
I'd also try some notching around ~2 kHz on the lead guitars (they sound a bit ear-gain-y, a bit shrill)?
Generally, my goal would be to flatten the spectrum out a little bit, and get those acoustic guitars participating a bit more in the intro.

Overall, good work!

Thank you for the kind reply! I made a second version and tried to address the things you mentioned

Hello,

This is a really interesting and unique version of the mix.

I love the flanger/phaser effect on the second melodic rhythm; however, there might be a bit too much phase effect in some parts of the mix. Additionally, it seems like there's a lack of bass support, and in the louder sections, the guitars feel a bit lacking.

Best regards!

Thanks for the listen! I decided to give it a new mix, and I got rid of the phaser effects for the most part. They were fun but distracting I suppose. I tried to make this mix sound more like the song probably should! Smile

Personally I think the vocals don't need much to tweak aside from maybe a tiny eq. If I remember correctly vocals already are processed and compressed. Your vocal here sounds like it's clipping and tough its a taste thing I don't think it works.

when the chorus hits after "dead enemies" the mix DRASTICALLY gets squashed. I'd dial back that master bus compressor. Unless that section of the song is a completely different section all together, in which case you need to match the intro section with it.
