I've just listened to your second version. It is really good. Maybe the drums could be a bit more upfront (the snare feels a bit week), but that reaches the realm of aesthetic decisions. I think the panning gets a bit strange towards the end of your mix. It feels like there comes a lot of low end/lower mids from the left and not much of the very same from the right. Maybe that is something to look into?
Usually it works better to edit the send-level than the fx-levels. Which is quite logical, if you think about it. If the send stays open it will send signal to the processor in your fx-channel. What you do with that channel's output is of no interest to the send.
