As I know nothing about heavy music, in this mix I was mainly studying ”what should be done”. So, not too much of my own ideas nor visions in this mix.

While mixing I listening Children of Bodom and of course the mix made by Blitzzz.

One of the hardest things among many for me was to reach the RMS level -6dB, and still preserve some sonic quality. I’m not sure if I make it at all. Typically my mixes abide around -12dB.

Normally I comment automatically quite much others, but in this case it may happen that I just dare not do that Smile
just like you, I don't know anything about heavy music, but the sound doesn't sound too different from other heavy songs I've heard in my life. The only thing that bothers me -and I don't know if I should dare to say so- is the snare. It sounds ok to me all through the song but those parts when it's playing fast and repeatedly (Like 1:25 for example). Then the high frequencies in it, really annoy me, I think that I would automate that part and lower them a little bit during that time. But again, I'm no heavy music lover, so what I'm pointing out might not be right Smile
Thanks for listening with thought!

I definetively agree with you, that machine gun effect is quite annoying to a person like me, who listens heavy music two times a year. (If I remember correctly it's made with kick) There's also many other parts that I find quite annoying in heavy music. But on the other hand, probably just the very same details that are annoying to me, are the details that make other people love heavy music.

And that same thing makes it almost impossible to mix heavy music for someone who is not a fan of it. How in earth can one do mixing decisions that "don't feel right"? And if one follows truely one's own slightly softer taste, we end up easily to something like "Frank Sinatra goes heavy" -music.

But still, it was very nice experience to mix this song. And I'm sure I will try another heavy song some day soon. I just have to develop my "role play" skills little bit more.
that's for sure! we have to be very versatile when mixing... if not, you get stuck in a style and you don't progress!
Hey Olli. I'm fairly new to mixing in general, but i am a fan of loud music. Personally it was a cool mix to listen too because from a balance standpoint, i could pick out everything very well. i especially liked the bass, but the rhythm guitar on the left sounded a little "honky" to me. Again i'm still training my ear for this stuff so take what i say with a grain of salt. cheers!
THanks for listening, guitarguy42. Nice to hear comments also from a fan of loud music.
I'm sure you're just right about honkiness of guitars. While mixing I felt that I was adding slightly too much mid-range content to rhythm guitars while I was trying to establsih their roles. And maybe the curves that I used to separated left-right-guitars from each other were too deep. I think I'll do a little smoother version soon.

And I will surely comment your version soon. To give true and honest subjective comments I must use my typical "fan of dynamic music" mode Smile
