I like the sound of the mix, but I couldn't help falling in love with the bass here! When I mixed this song a few days ago, I took Dr Hook's "when you're in love with a beautiful woman" as a reference.
My skills to achieve a certain sound when referencing are not too good yet, but anyway I liked listening to that song after so much time to get some 'inspiration'. I used to play it 100 times a day when I bought the record back in the late 70's

When critiquing a mix of this song, the very first thing I look at is how the acoustic guitar was handled. That track is in abysmal condition, and it stands on its own at the very beginning of the song; if that sounds good, I know the mixer knows his stuff.
Not only do you know your stuff, you even managed to add texture to the track; it actually has stereo presence! Don't know how you did that but my hat's off to you for being able to make that acoustic guitar sound so freakin' awesome! In fact, aside from the second set of vocals being way too loud (kinda startled me when they kicked in) this mix was just a total joy to listen to, start to finish. With the hiss still intact, it couldn't help bring back some of the warm fuzzies of nostalgia for me, listening to my grandfather's rather extensive collection of 8-tracks, right down to the nice smooth bass. My only complaint is: where are the bongos? I liked them but you seem to have either set them way down in the mix or removed them entirely.
This is not an easy multitrack to make sound good. My sincere respect on a fantastic job!

I'm happy you like the guitars and stereo presence ,not really knowing technically what i'm doing (which why i sometimes struggle giving technical feedback to others lol),i just try to copy the sound of the reference track as a starting point.
Not sure what happened with the bongos but will sort them out and the second vocals along with a couple of other things on a remix

Great mix. So difficult this one. Just the right balance of accepting the limitations of the material and making it sound as good as possible within those limits.
