I mixed this in Harrison a few weeks ago. Justin is a friend of mine and a fantastic musician.
This is a fun song to get that crisp high and low bass smooth style mix. I'm not sure I've 100% hit the mark yet, but I think I have a good thing going.
I actually made a mix in Reaper and a mix in MixBus to do a non scientific comparison study of how I mix based on each DAW. Granted, mood and how my ears were calibrated on that day will influence how I mixed the song. I did the mixes far enough apart in time (a few weeks) so that I think any bias based on previous choices were at least minimilized.
Hi Draper,
I'm liking the Harrison mix. Must be the transformers and opamps they use! lol I think you have achieved that smooth sound you're after quite nicely with this mix. The only things I can be critical of is 1, the snare is sounding a little hard and not so rounded (if that make sense) and 2, the vocal is a bit too hot and present. The second mix for me is sounding too scooped and emphasized at the top end. Although I probably like the snare more in the second. Referenced with cans only.
Sounds like a great song, haven't heard this one before. Great job so far.
Dave
I like the snare more in the second I think its a bit too much in the first and a fair bit of sibilance on
the vox I feel in both mixes the vox are a bit to loud but all in all pretty good .

Hello Draper
On the second mix the vocal is too outside of the rest of the song level wise. it's masking some parts of it.
I prefer the first one. The voice is still a bit too upfront, but is not as outside as in the second one. It's warmer and bass sounds fuller. Every instrument is more audible. Even the dynamics are more present.

Based on your notes, i made a revision. . . however I somehow managed to limit the crap out of my mix, much more than usual. Probably the fact that I have two limiting amps on my conversion file. . . oh well. Anyone wanna see a brick wall?
Draper
PS tried out the "revive" plugin. . .may have added too much "warmth" a little subby?
pps, will do a more proper conversion with less squashiness later

The man has talent, his vocal performance is on point especially! How exactly was this track recorded with gear wise?
Mixing is way more art and soul than science. We don’t really know what we’re doing. We do it because we love music! It’s the love of music first. Eddie Kramer
