On the line Obelix mix
#21
I am not mastering engineer too. I do a little bit of both (mixing and mastering) . I do this just for the hobby. And one last thing, I have only stock plugins and they work perfectly fine for me. If one cannot mix with stock plugins, buying plugins worth hundreds of bucks does not help that person anyway.

For the most part the mantra of limiting your options in the mix is a good one. There are lots of things you can't do with the plugins you have, though, because stock plugins are designed to have as little character or sonic imprint as possible. That's so they can be used transparently for many different applications, but it makes it hard/impossible to add "special sauce" when the situation requires it.

You might find that you can't get what you're hearing in your head with stock plugs. There are a huge variety of free ones on the web, and many of them are every bit as useful as the expensive ones in my opinion. It's worth checking out.
