Oh! Yeah, I know that technique. My instructors called that a 'crotch mic'. When all you have is one mic, that can work to get the drum kit as long as the drummer holds back a bit on the kick and the snare. Never used it myself, but it's in my memory as a fall back. Naturally, their demonstration didn't go so well since they tried it with a 414. Even with the pad both on the mic and at the board it was just getting killed.
