Pedaling Prince Mix: Selwyn Jazz - Much Too Much
#1
I'm not much of a fan of big band music generally so, until now, I'd never done this one. However, once again this is one of the ones Pauli tackled so I decided to do it so I'd have an idea what he faced when he did it.

Wow. This thing was much too much work (pun intended Tongue)!

I've only ever worked with one other track with such an enormous amount of mic spill; as I recall it was "Heart on My Thumb" by How to Kill a Conversation. Anyway, since there was a nice room mic here to carry the overall sound of the ensemble I decided the best way to handle the mic spill was to bandpass filter most of the close mic tracks to isolate the fundamental frequencies of each instrument, eliminating completely any sounds outside of each instrument's range; any loss of fidelity or air as a result of this would be picked up by the room mics.

I was going for a kind of "club" feeling here, as if you're in a jazz club having a drink, listening to a live band on stage. Smile It actually worked pretty well, I think; what do you think?

Great live band sound John ,I personally would expect the drums to be a touch louder Big Grin.
