Borderline - The Glyn Johns mix
#1
Production wise.. my mix is an ode to Glyn Johns
or.. Ethan Johns for that matter

Interesting song..
I'm Canadian and I live in a city not too far away from the US border

Though I suspect that this song was about the Detroit area, perhaps ??

anyways,

enjoy

Really like your mix Marc. What kind of outboard gear are you using?

Am I the only one that thinks he sounds like Roy Orbison meets Neil Young?

Oooo.. someone wants to talk gear Big Grin

hmm, Roy and Neil eh ?

well, this singer certainly wouldn't win any prizes on 'The Voice'
and.. much like Neil young though, this a special voice with a certain character, and I can certainly dig that.. Cool

Roy on the other hand..
he was a very technical singer with some voice chops.

so back to mix/gear,

I started the mix in ProTools.. my kick and snare have the DigiDesign noise gate plug on em'.. and I'm also using the API EQ plug on both as well for a little extra bite.

I'm also using some Waves L1 plugins to tame the dynamics a bit

after that,
I'm running through a Tascam MX-2424 as the D/A converter.
Summing through a 24-channel DDA CS8 analog console

Kick - 1176 (slowest attack and quickest release 12:1 ratio)
Snare - 1176 (slowest attack and quickest release 12:1 ratio)
Stereo overhead - Aural Exciter (only 'big bottom' is active)
Bass - TOA CL-021 (amazing on bass)
Lead vox - dbx 266 (these are cheap, but work on vocals)

Time based effect:
Roland SDE-3000 feeding an AKG BX10 spring reverb

and.. I caputre my board mix with a Tascam DR-60D at 24bit/96kHz

and I import the track into my PC and master it with Adobe Audition

It's quite a procedure.. but I always dig the results

when I mix live.. for the love of gawd ! give me a digital console with an iPad. Big Grin

Yeah plugins are handy candy. Summin it through a camera? Far out

With live gigs it sounds like you'll be able to mix the gig while on tour or even on the couch? Ill be remote viewing from the live room of my studio to the control room with that software sometime soon.

Be nice to hear your mix of this song recorded with great mic's and pre's

no it's not a camera..
it's a separate audio recorder that can be attached to a camera (if need be) for ENG work.. we bought it mainly for audio booming work on our film projects for the college I work at.

Nice Telefunken session.. Smile
they are well put together, really good stuff.

I mixed a Telefunken session already.. feel free to comment.

I think the hassle you go to sounds worth while to me that really is a cracking sounding mix

Excellent!
Maybe it's my monitors, but I would prefer just a little bit a darker top end. But that's just a matter of taste. Nothing to do with the quality of your mix.

This multitrack would have been much better if Glyn Johns had recorded those drums. My all time favorite sounds in this genre is Glyn John's recordings of Eagles.
