Initially mixed this far too hot with overcompressed horns like a pop recording. Turns out according to my wife who is a professional musician that traditional big band needs mixing like a classical ensemble with most of the dynamics retained.
That being said, a tape emulator added some saturation and light levelling on the horn section, seemed to help it all gel together, and a little buss compression brought the whole mix together.
