My second full mix ever
#1
So this is the second full mix I have ever done. Lots of hardware on this.
My Heritage Audio successor on the 2 bus going into two Pultecs.
Distressor on the parallel vocal bus into EQ and vocal rider.
Drum bus on a ART Pro VLA compressor. Which are $300 and sound KILLER with Mullard tubes in them. Guitar tone sounded boxy and awful. I EQ'd the crap out of the two main tracks with Neve 551 EQ's. DI tracks were re-amped through my Kemper. All drums I replaced with samples via Slate trigger. Just didnt dig the sound of the drums at all. Bass DI is going into the Neural DSP Parallax. Bass amp track is going into my BAE 1073 EQ. Boosting mids and lows about 3 DB.
The snare is going into a Fredenstien artistic compressor then into a JDK Audio V14 EQ.
Mastered with Ozone> Pultecs> that Waves limiter.

Give me some honest feedback. Remember. Its my 2nd full mix I have ever done

I like the raw energy of this mix. With that beeing said, the guitars sound strangely over-eq'd and fizzy, almost out of phase'ish and are way too loud. The vocals are not in the middle of the mix which can work from time to time but it feels very out of place in this song.

I think it's a bit too much of everything, especially for this kind of music which has a lot of 90'ies metal/hardcore vibes. Examples:

Biohazard

Pro Pain:

Madball:

And of course - Downswet:

My advice would be: Try to do less processing and stick with the basics (volume, panning, and automation), mix with your heart and guts (turn off your overanalyzing brain from time to time) and don't focus so much on gear Smile Other than that you are definitely on the right track.

Thanks for taking the time. The vocals are off to the right and the guitars do sound fizzy. I have done a few more mixes since doing this one and I can totally see what I did here. I think my ears were getting fatigued too from being in front of the computer for so long. I have a lot of expensive outboard gear I tend to overuse I think just for the sake of using it. I have to stop that. Great advice.
