Tried to keep the raw energy of the song intact while still providing a bit of polish Please have a listen and let me know how it comes across. Thanks!

A very commercial sounding mix Andrew! The only very minor thing maybe is the toms are booming a little through the drums rolls. Just nitpicking really. Well Done! I think you have achieved your objective.Big Grin

Thanks Dave - is it all the toms that are boomy, or just at certain times?

I think it's possibly just one of the toms that sounding just a bit resonate. From 0.16 mark it repeats 4 times, so that should help you see which one it is. I hear it again clearly @ 1:00 and 1:53. I think it just stands out a bit because of how tight you have the drum sound overall. I really like the control of the upper frequencies Andrew. Super effort that!

Ok cool, thanks Dave. I'll try to track down that resonant tom and see if I can improve things. Thanks again for listening, commenting & following up - much appreciated!

Hi Andrew - really well done mix. Your choice at the intro and adding the flanger at around 1:30 are perfect for the tune. I'd like to share a couple of minor comments that should be considered personal preferences:

1. The hat at 0:07 comes out of nowhere and tends to overshadow the vox at that time (to my ears) and brilliant intro.

2. At about 0:43 - 0:45 the pre-delay from the verb is a bit too pronounced for my taste.

Again, very well done. Cheers!

Thanks ONITB! After listening to 15,000 versions of the song with exactly the same panning & zero attempts at creative input, I was ready to eviscerate my own eardrums! It was for my own sanity more than anything!

No worries - good idea there, I was a bit torn on that myself - you convinced me to change it!

That is actually a delay "throw" at the end of that phrase. There are others later on too, but I think that one may be a little awkward - I might give it a bit of a tweak.

Quote:Again, very well done. Cheers!

Thanks for the careful listen and the suggestions - much appreciated!

Ver3 sounds great. Love the balance and how smooth it sounds, its got that analog roundness and punch. No negatives. mind if I ask what compressor your using on the drum buss and bass? sounds fat

really nice, Pro mix

Thanks Kirk - glad you like it...

No problem - I don't have the session handy to me at the moment, as I'm away from home on a few days break, but from memory, the drum buss probably has Slate's FG-401 compressor. I think I might have used it on some of the close mics too, along with Boz's 10dB comp. I had some parallel comp from the UAD Fatso Jnr, slamming/distorting the close mics and just mixed in underneath. The room mics were also radically low shelved and slammed/distorted with the Slate 1176.

The bass is usually a bit less straightforward. I tend to split the bass into 2 or 3 different bands and process each differently, and then combine them on a "bass buss" which usually gets more eq and comp from UAD's Neve 88R channel strip (the old legacy plugin). I think I used the Slate 1176 for the "low end" bass track, and the "high end" bass channel was Kilohertz Faturater plugin followed by Waves L1.

It's all a it hard to describe briefly, but in this thread I go into a lot more detail about how I generally process bass & drums (& other stuff!). Different song, but it's a similar approach:
