The 'Mix Rescue' mix
#1
Here's the mix I did of this track for Sound On Sound magazine's February 2007 'Mix Rescue' column, using (if I recall correctly) only Cubase SX2's bundled plug-ins and a few additional bits of freeware such as the Digital Fishphones Fish Fillets bundleWindows SoftwareApple Software and Christian Knufinke's SIRWindows Software. This mix was carried out in rather challenging conditions where I couldn't really get access to a decent nearfield system, so I ended up doing almost all the work on a pair of Sony MDR7509 headphones, with assistance from a Canford Diecast speaker (for mono reference) and the Roger Nichols InspectorWindows SoftwareApple Software spectrum-analyser plug-in. With hindsight, I think the overall tone gets rather too harsh at times, and the verse-chorus transition still isn't as good as it should be. I'd probably be tempted to add in an extra pad or something (Hammond would probably work very well here) to fill things out a bit during the choruses. Ah well...
