Better Way - HB Mix
#1
After an enforced 4 month layoff, I'm back!

This is my first mix in a new studio set-up so not 100% sure of sound yet. Felt very rusty putting this one together but fun none the less...definitely missed it!

Nice spacing! The kick may seem a bit small, but I think I am a kick junkie of sorts.

Really nice sounding mix Simon! Good to see you back!

Hello Hb

Your balances are good, I just feel it's missing some mids overall.

hey Shul, thx for listening. re mids, do you mean vox or music or something else?

For this type of mix, with so many acoustic instruments, I'll generally pull 2-3 db out of the 2-3khz range from the acgtrs so they don't clash with the intelligibility of the vox. Maybe that's what you're hearing.

cheers, simon

It's the Ukulele mostly. It sounds like the low mids were lower a bit too much (or highs were enhanced) at 1:08 The acoustic is also missing some low mids which I find to be a bodyless sensation.

I would dare say it's around the 300-600 hz or perhaps you enhanced too much of the 3k-5k area somewhere.
This sounds good is just the bodyless sensation I get lol Smile

In the end is a taste thing so no worries.

....that kinda makes sense. My own preference is generally towards the bodyless end of the spectrum when there is a strong bass line in support or strong vox....but i agree having listened to it again that some small enhancement around 500hz would be nice....I'll put it on my to do list Big Grin

Like the new guitar sound -- just the ticket! The vocals are cutting through better now, but I reckon you could probably add a gentle 2dB boost around 200Hz to the vocal, because it does still feel a touch thin. I'd also reckon another decibel of lead-vocal level overall would probably be good, and I'd recommend some stronger de-essing too. It's not the extra air effect that's causing the problem -- the sibilance was already too strong in your first-version mix, although it's not something I dwelt on specifically in the podcast discussion.

Thx Mike. Yup, that sibilance is definitely a bit cringe-worthy....I was hoping to get away with it! I'll dive back in and have a gander. Cheers, Simon
