Benjamin John: 'Better Way'
#1
This song sounds deceptively easy to mix...it's not! First priority was the vocal sibilance and general balancing of the LV. Compression and limiting is generally not your friend with a recording such as this. I found careful use of EQ and layered subtle reverbs to be most effective. Also, finding a nice stereo spread with the percussive elements was important too, as it's very easy for clicks and claps to be overbearing. The acoustic guitars are also very percussive, so EQ decisions and panning need to be well thought out to ensure each instrument has it's place.

Cheers,
Mick

Love the filter on the Intro! The verb on the claps sound great! Maybe the cymbal seems a bit bright? Just a little? Maybe. . . Kinda. . . maybe not. It's a wonderful mix. . . .but there's something I can't quite put my finger on. Something with the drums. Since i can't quite place it, I'm going to say it's not an issue. . . .but I feel like something is missing. . . .oh well.

Really nice work! I wish I could articulate what I feel is a little off. . . .

(This is bugging me, I usually can place what is causing me to feel like this)

Hey Draper, thanks for stopping by. I think the feeling you are trying to articulate is pure joy. It's quite normal to feel this unexplained sensation after hearing an amazing mix that resonates with the soul. Just roll with it, brother TongueTongue
