Too Bright mix
#1
Hello everyone !

Thanks “Mu” for sharing your work.

Here’s my mix of “Too Bright” - and a rough description of decisions I made, in case some of you have interest / comments to help me improve my skills.

Please don't hesitate to give me your feedback.

Cheers,

Moussa

ARRANGEMENT:

I muted backing vocals and rhodesFX during the 2nd half of choruses because I preferred to leave some room for Synth3

I increased master volume during choruses compared to verses.

TRACKS PROCESSING:

On most tracks (i.e. all except kick & bass): low cut at appropriate freq (between 100 and 300Hz) to clear low freqs.

Drums

Give more energy during verses by:
Boosting Kick’s low freq
Parallel compressing the drums bus

Bass
Verse:
compress (ratio 4) to increase sustain

Chorus (“Synth2”)
Split the track into 2 tracks with EQ at 300Hz
Lower track: leave room for Kick via sidechain
Higher track:
Add distortion to increase mid freq
Cut around 3kHz to make room for Synth3
Add delay of 30ms to one side to widen stereo image
Add different EQ settings to L and R to widen stereo image.

Add another bass line via a sub bass synth (basic sine/square wave) to bring energy (also with Kick S/C)

Guitars:
Bridge:
Gtr5: Low cut at 1kHz to limit the sound to high freqs.
Chorus:
Bandpass 600Hz -> 5kHz to limit freq range

Synths:
Verse:
Rhodes: add ping pong delay to bring movement
Synth1: high cut around 2,5kHz to remove harshness

Chorus:
Rhodes FX:
Heavy compression (10:1) to better control dynamics
High pass around 1,5kHz to leave room for the bass

Synth3:
Heavy compression §6:1) to better control dynamics
Gentle boost around 3kHz to go with the cut in Synth2

Vocals: where I had most trouble.
I put an autotune plugin on all tracks but didn’t fine-tune it enough to get a proper result all the time.

Verses:
Damped hi freq a bit (-2dB shelf @ 3kHz) to add contrast with chorus
Compress 4:1 to limit dynamic range

Chorus:
Lead 2:
Add warmth with tube distortion
-6dB at 6kHz to remove nasality
Compress to limit dynamic range
Add a slapback via filtered delay spread L and R with different EQ settings to widen stereo image

BackingVoc:
Low cut around 350Hz and -7dB at 10kHz to limit nasality and freq range (to leave room for Lead voc)

Bridge:
Compress 6:1 to limit dynamic range
+6dB hi shelf at 3kHz to increase brightness
Added some delays to add movement / interest.
