Regarding the drums: I did make some concessions soundwise in order to make this mix work on tiny laptop speakers. So I created a subgroup for the kick featuring the upper bass frequencies (with some treatments), which I mixed in to get enough impact on small speakers.
Reverb is held back until the final chorus part where the lead vocal gets a lift. Perhaps I should have given the strings more reverb for the ending but I was afraid to make it sound to "sugary".
Regarding the overall mix, I think the vocal is more rhyhmic than melodic; there are hardly any long notes. So I thought the drums and getting enough impact are important for the song feel. I tried featuring the more ryhthmical cello parts (think Eleanor Rigby), but I found their attack was too slow to complement the groove. Serious editing might do the trick, but I don't have time for that right now, unfortunately.
