To comment on your observation, pauli:
When I use synths as primary leads, I tend to compose them between 2-3 (sometimes even 4) octaves - adds for a nice surprise-'jump'.
In any case, I would recommend (even though I hate self-advertisment) you to check out the reference-track uploaded on CMT.
You can hear out the synths and compare it with the mixed synths of yours - perhaps you removed -too- much from the 700Hz~ region?
As long as you don't steal too much from the mids & lowmids, it shouldn't be all too much you need to do in order to remove some of the treble.
And yes, I would recommend you to use some reverb - They were designed with Delay and / or Reverb in mind.
