HB, thought I'd check this out like I said, and here's what I found.
I compared the visual of the waveforms as well as the metering with everything left nominal. These two screenshots tell the story. In both, the Blue track is Cracker's song, Low (one of many tunes I used as a reference when Mastering Stitch-Up), and the yellow track is my Mix of Bobby Nobody.

Totally understand where you're coming from - those graphics are almost identical - and it obviously sounds good at your end.
It could well be a speaker calibration issue - definitely worth checking one way or another.
As a comparison, when i listen to your mix, i have to cut my speaker gain 50% otherwise my windows will blow-out....lol

That's funny! I don't know whether to be thrilled or miserable. I mean, it isn't every day that an audio engineer hears someone say their mix is LOUDER than the commercial releases!! LOL!
