For me, there’s some wonderful craftsmanship in this song. I thought every instrument, without exception, was beautifully rich in emotion and musicality. However, this was also partly it’s undoing as I found it accumulatively expressive to the point where it overwhelmed my brain while actively listening.
To be clear, that’s not a criticism of the artist(s), but merely an expression of my own personal response to the stimuli. Understanding these things to be somewhat subjective i.e. humans are crap at multitasking, I wanted to try and deliver the song in a way that it felt more settled yet still able to communicate the richness of emotion. In other words, by reducing the complex interactions and their density, I hoped to actually increase the emotional delivery.
This desire introduced some interesting bespoke challenges in the mix process I’ve never encountered before, and will likely never encounter again.
