Joe's bar by VV - vovolan - 13-05-2023 Some notes I made while working on the mix The performance is kinda clunky Mono overheads track Aiming for natural vibe Not using the snare sample Solid kick sound I think already processed The drummer hits too lightly or the mic placement during recording was wrong (snare top) Track 18 guitar terrible tone instead of eqing ran it through an amp again To me the whole song except for the main vocal so the drums, guitars, harmonies have this kind of 70's vibe I'm thinking fleetwood mac Rumors? Just my impression ![]() Feel free to leave any feedback, I'd appreciate that thanks RE: Joe's bar by VV - Roy - 13-05-2023 (13-05-2023, 12:10 PM)vovolan Wrote: Some notes I made while working on the mixThe performance is a bit clunky. It's great. The mono overhead doesn't feel like a problem. It works. I get not using the snare sample but it might provide much needed midrange. There might be some phase issues with the snare but I might be thinking of a different song. That said, it's always good to double check. I'm not sure what the issue is with the drummer hitting the snare too lightly. That wasn't something that I found an issue with and the hits felt fine. Also, the whole kit might just be samples. I can't recall. I know the kick tracks are with the underlying cymbal leakage on the close kick and hard click on the out of the 'outside' mic. It's a bad edit. There's no such thing as a terrible guitar tone. I'm kidding of course. While I wouldn't necessarily go with the guitar sound they did, they did. So we, work with it. Re-amping it is a fine idea. Though that outro solo is really buried in this mix. Which feels like a mix problem. It may or may not be a bad tone but it's a solo so present it proudly. At the moment as a casual listener I can't tell if it's a bad tone but I can tell that it's buried and not connecting with me as a listener so that's a mix flaw. Overall it feels kinda "hollow" not bad but lacking. Especially in the intro. The weird noise in the overhead at 9 or 10 seconds in stands out particularly in this mix. Dynamically it's a little flat. Maybe it's the overall 'dryness'. Maybe the bass could come back. It's a fine mix. It's kinda just there. It feels like a fine start but the mix doesn't move me at all. Hope that helps RE: Joe's bar by VV - vovolan - 13-05-2023 thanks for your reply! > Though that outro solo is really buried in this mix Yeah you're 100% right on that, I went for full squeeze here tbh I didn't know what to with it; cause imo it doesn't sound too good on its own and doesn't work too well with the outro vocals either There's another mix on this forums where someone completely removed the outro vocals and let the solo shine so I guess it's not just me ![]() > I'm not sure what the issue is with the drummer hitting the snare too lightly The tracks were already somehow processed because the snare is gated so it could as well be that, but I doubt it, the overall feeling makes me think it's performance thing like those drum fills at 0:50, 2:00 or 4:00 is completely off. Anyway it's not something that can't be fixed it only takes more time, but in the end of the day that's not something you do when practicing mixing; I only wrote that down so I have reference for future mixes > The mono overhead doesn't feel like a problem Same as above, only for future reference. For me if the overhead is mono then I'd love to have stereo room mics but that not the case here ![]() RE: Joe's bar by VV - Dangerous - 14-05-2023 Great mix, I really enjoyed this one. It has a slightly older not smashed up feel to it that works for my ears. The mono drums and the width of the guitars works also. There are a lot of upper mid competing freqs with a track like this, but you have made room for them all. Vocals are clear and guitar parts are articulate and well spaced. The mix translates well to smaller speakers also. I like your style. Dave RE: Joe's bar by VV - Jambon-beurre - 15-05-2023 I’d be curious to know your chain for the vocal, most mixes here have super harsh result, you’ve tamed that very well. I'm happy to hear that, because that's exactly what I was going for- the 70's vibe (15-05-2023, 07:53 PM)Jambon-beurre Wrote: I’d be curious to know your chain for the vocal, most mixes here have super harsh result, you’ve tamed that very well. hi, thanks for listening. To be honest I haven't done anything crazy here really, but since you asked there you go: desser cla 1176 3-7 r:4 doing about 8db ssl channel low cut 70, high cut 9k, two small cuts at 2100-2800 and 750, 2db compression multiband comp at 550hz for the boxy notes saturation knob neutral slap delay 10% imager 15% sends to global room reverb and global chorus used the tuned track only RE: Joe's bar by VV - Mixinthecloud - 18-05-2023 There is a lot good about your mix. I would agree it gets a bit crowded in the upper mids which may account for the lack of presence in the second guitar solo. I would also have liked a bit more punch from the snare, bass and kick, but that is a relatively minor issue. In general, I would say it is a touch too bright. Otherwise this is an excellent rendition with good detail and good attention to the groove. Nicely done. RE: Joe's bar by VV - brady85 - 04-06-2023 Loving the 70's vibe on this mix, i really enjoy the midrange! RE: Joe's bar by VV - RexBleckman - 16-01-2024 I just had a go at mixing this track myself, and I posted it at the top of the forum. I really like how the bass sounds, super warm and prominent, how did you do it? |
