Modern vs Retro version, which one you like best? - MystycalFanfare - 03-12-2013

I post 2 files, both are same mix. What makes different is, I put some tape saturation plugins (Massey Tapehead) while mastering to give some old school vibe. Am I made it? Let me hear your thought guys!

Generally a good mix, but there is a few things that needs some tweaking.

The drums are to loud, they appear to be the front most instruments, where in reality it is more natural for this genre that the horns are in front. As of now the horn section appears to be behind the band.

The reverb on the vocalist is just wrong, he appears to be in a completely different space from the rest.

Did you use any compression? Unfortunately this recording was done with too much compression on the way in, so it might be a good thing to stay away from compression in the mix process, especially on the drums.

Hey thanks for feedback!
Yes It was too loud. I'm a drumcentric mixer Smile perhaps to much for particular kinda genre. I don't use compression much, only a db or two of gr, I realized it was already compressed on the way in. But I'm using gate on drums for filtering out the leakage. I guess that the reason why it sound compressed.
