Rat Race - Edsagoodn - 10-01-2020

There is a lot going on in this and I found EQing to reduce masking very challenging and would appreciate any advice feedback

Hey mate,

Yeah this is a pretty challenging mix. I think the effects you are using are a great way to separate the vocals from the rest of the mix. It's also tempting to have everything as loud as everything else which is probably a mistake in a track like this because there is so much going on. If you do want to have everything upfront, then I would suggest creating holes for everything to fit into. For instance, I notice that your bass is very present and clear - this is a good thing and not many people know how to do this well. However, in this mix, because there's so much going on, I would steer away from a clear present bass because it would take away from the vocals and rhythm guitars. I hope that makes sense.

Other than that, I would also try to get more seperation in your drum kit because that can also muddy the mix. I would get the kick and snare more defined, they don't necessarily need to be louder, and let them be what the listener grabs onto for tracking the tempo of the song.

thanks for this. Played it back minus drums and bass and I can see where some of the issues are. I mixed drum and bass first and it sounds like the track is based around them. I'll remix maybe trying to start with the focus (vocals) and build the rest around them
