Speak Softly: 'Broken Man' - juanjose1967 - 04-07-2013

Following the suggestions for newbies to start mixing, here I am with one of those songs considered "easy".

Let's see if you like it or not!

Vox way too harsh, make her voice give you a hard on.
For me its all too loud, let the vox come ,turn that backing down
The fx on the vox are vile, try to use more delay on vox.its your friend.

hahahahaha!!! I like your point of view about how her voice should sound!! I will keep that as a good piece of advice!

RE: Speak Softly: 'Broken Man' - juanjose1967 - 04-07-2013

I've tried the make the voice less harsh. But I'm not sure that I've succeeded Confused

I've also added some delay and I've lowered a little bit some of the instruments.

Hiya JuanJose

Good effort!
If I may offer some help to get you over the problem with the singer's vocals, at the moment there's a lot of low end in the vocal - especially the verse vocal - that makes it sound muffled. Cut away frequencies below 180Hz to start with and the vocals will automatically give the perception of having more clarity. You might even be able to slide the HPF as high as 250Hz. I can't remember exactly what cuts and boosts I made to the vocals to get them to sit nicely in the song but I think there was something removed in the 300-350Hz range as well.

Try the HPF @ 180Hz to start with and listen to the result and see how you go from there.

Hope this has helped you!

Dags

Hi, Dags!! you gave me a good hint to improve the vocals.

I thought that by cutting off those frequencies, I would make the voice sound less warm, but I'm glad to know that it didn't have anything to do with it.

Now it's much, much better in my opinion.

Thank you so much!! Everyday I'm learning new things here and I love it!! Smile

Better but there is still a lot of middle in the vocal, try pulling out some 3k and 200

Here it is again with your suggestions, Takka

One question. I mixed the other day this group's other song they have available here to mix and I didn't have all these problems with her voice.

I know that there are no rules in mixing and what it might work for a sound, it might not for another one. But considering that it's the same voice and recorded in the same studio conditions, why do you think that the treatment that has to be applied is so different? could it be because of the piano sound that is using the lowmid frequencies that I had to cut off?

RE: Speak Softly: 'Broken Man' - takka360 - 07-07-2013

Thats the one
recorded in the same studio conditions? dont come into it ,its the vocal itself.

RE: Speak Softly: 'Broken Man' - thedon - 08-07-2013

I had the same problem vith the vocals on this track
For some reason the verse and chorus vocals sound like they were recorded with different Eq on them, what i had to do was to split them up and treat them as seperate tracks with very different Eq settings to get the sound i wantedHuh !
There is probably an easier way but im learning too Wink !
