I would echo concerns about master compression. It is adversely affecting cymbals and choking an otherwise great sounding mix. Let it breathe and don't worry about loud. I'll turn it up. For me it is not the bass guitar which impedes the kick. It is more the other way 'round.

Hey MITC,

i'm not sure its master compression at all really as there is hardly any......1-2 dB SSL on the mix buss, 2:1 ratio and less than 1 dB fairchild 670 on the master.

for the cymbals its probably some bad EQ or something that needs a tweek in the OH set-up

Not sure about mix being loud either..... Its -12 RMS with dynamic range of 10. considering the mix is 2-3 years old id say that's conservative for the era.....
