Darren (aka Dags) is a semi-professional digital audio recording and mix engineer, live sound engineer, former recording artist and synth player.
As a solo artist, he has been composing music since the late '80s and has performed in or session-recorded with various Melbourne-based cover and original bands, written music for student film and amateur theatre, and produced songs for his own former solo project ‘XAEJA’ and collaborative project 'The Memory Trade'.
Graduating from Deakin in 1992 with a Bachelor of Applied Science, Darren has been pursuing songwriting and digital recording as a hobby, learning his craft through research and practical application of self-taught recording techniques for his own enjoyment and for other musicians’ recording projects.
Darren’s interest and skills in audio enabled him to gain 10 years’ casual employment with Music Junction/Billy Hyde Music Blackburn in their high-tech department from 1996 to 2006.
In 2008, after almost 20 years of self-taught music production, he took 12 months off a 15 year career in the Public Service workforce to return to school in order to undertake the Diploma of Music Industry (Technical Production) course at SAE College, Melbourne, simply to do something a bit more fun with his life for a year.
During this time he established himself as a live sound engineer and is frequently hired by bands to engineer their events in various clubs around the CBD & eastern suburbs. He has also extended his freelance studio engineering work through contacts at several professionally run studios in Melbourne.
Trading as 'Hillside Sound', Darren has recorded and mixed professional quality tracks for many local and interstate artists and bands.
