Had another play with it.

Crumbs, Alan -- that's splendid work! Puts my back-of-an-envelope preview to shame, even just listening over my PC speakers. I just hope it took you more than 20 minutes... Smile Love all the sounds in their own right, and the balance just sounds right on every level. You've tamed that hat, made the guitars and horns sound warm and full, convinced me with the violin in the arrangement... what's not to like?

Well then, folks, that'll be the gauntlet thoroughly thrown down! Big Grin (In case any of you aren't subscribed to the Small-studio Secrets mailing list, I mentioned in there that I was going to be selecting my favourite mix in the first couple of weeks to be the new preview mix for this multitrack (replacing my rather dodgy 20-minute balancing job) and will be posting a credit, with URL, for the engineer in the library listing.)
That'll do it Alan....really nice job....definitely inspired me to pull my finger out on this one....bar has been set high indeed
Cheers. Its not a song to mix quickly, but well recorded and all the elements for a fantastic mix are in there.
Glad my mix has inspired you and look forward to the mix from you.
Nice retro rock’n’roll touch in your mix. It feels like live mix.
Balances feel just right, and vocals have nice attitude.

Only tweaking idea that came to my mind is about piano: is it too wide for this overall idea? More narrow piano might sound little bit more focused and localiezed in sound stage.

Let’s rock!
Excellent to my ears. I think it's soundwise tighter and more powerful than the first version, although it's not as loud. (Maybe you just forget to turn on the final limiter. )
I like the sound of your mix and after attempting myself you have done a really good job Big Grin.
Cheers mate for feedback
It's a powerful mix, indeed. Excellent discipline with EQ. The dynamic management is pretty strict for my taste :/ I can hear a very fast, high ratio compressor working on the vocals, something like a really heavily driven LA2A.... but despite the rather heavy compression (to me anyway) you really kept the balance and separation very clear. Not easy.

Great job on the high end, here, too... my monitors are absolutely nasty and revealing from the high mids up (makes mixing driven guitars an exercise in extreme sorrow), and I haven't got a quibble. I think I hear a bit of a lowish midrange buildup in the prechorus vocals that's causing some of the compression to go a little wibbly wobbly?

Great work, Alan.
this is far too hot for my ears - this nearly blew the cans off my head! i'm wondering if part of your strategy in saving time on the automation and fix the balance is to push the final processing hard? one of the benefits you are potentially exploiting from this outcome is the fact that loudness sells.

i challenge you to produce a mix to -14LUFS integrated...i bet you can't. Big Grin

if i fire up the DAW this evening, i'll drop this in and see what it's doing on the meter for interest.
