My first ever mix of a hip-hop song. I was quite pleased with the result.
I'm not usually a fan of music using samples and synths (I found the raw tracks to be quite hollow and dull) so I tried to add some variation to the loops using a variation of plugins.
For example, I used harmonic distortion and phaser to give some life to the extremely boring bass tone, phaser on some of the piano, lots of reverb on the piano, and delays and reverbs on the vocals.
I also muted out sections of each instrument and the backing vocals, to give some further variation to the song.
I also (this was the first time I have ever attempted it) tried to use sidechained compressors working with the synths and snare/clap, but my original mix with the sidechains sounded better in the end.
I put together this mix in around two hours using Studio One stock plugins. I'd love to hear any feedback about how to improve my mix!
