A nice song to mix!! Take a look and tell me your opinion if you please. Smile
Hey Andreas, thanks for your comment!

I like many of the sounds you got here, particularly the heaviness of the guitars. Most other mixes have rather underemphasized them because they were really hard to mix in, so I salute you for that. I like the distant drums, too... I'm a self confessed reverb enthusiast Big Grin but I'd perhaps automate the send return's volume to keep the verb contribution under control during the busier sections where everything's fighting for space. 69 tracks is a DOOZIE and it's so easy to lose sight of things like that... my mix needed a lot more automation, too, but after the 4 hours I put into getting the backing vocals sounding the way I wanted, it was time to move on.

I think there's a bit too much room and compression in some places. During the big parts, the combination of both makes the mix feel a bit congested and washed out, and I'm missing some of the transients in much of the mix, particularly the backing vocals, which sound like they might be compressed very, very heavily, because they peak early and hold at that level very unnaturally steadily... you can get away with that on synths, electric guitars, and even drums if it suits the mix balance, but on a vocal it's a dead giveaway... if the you feel the comp's ratio is fitting your balance needs on a vocal track, then I'd suggest decreasing both the attack and the release time, adjusting the threshold accordingly, until the sound isn't so obviously unnatural, and soft kneed compressors are more transparent on a vocal as well. I think I hear a rather short (30-40 ms?) delay on the vocal, but the feedback is way too high... either that or it's a strange reverb... might give that a look, too.

Honestly though, I like your vision for this song, and you were successful in some areas where I wasn't, particularly with the drum sound. Good work! Just a few considerations for your next dense mix: it's almost always a good idea to automate reverb returns to make space during the choruses, and take a look at those predelays. Higher predelays make the source sound feel closer, like the length of time it takes the sound to reflect of the wall is higher, and make sure the reverb tails are short enough that it's not cluttering things up, especially if you're compressing the master bus, since that technique exaggerates effects tails. And again, on instruments that an audience has a clear idea how they should sound, such as vocals, acoustic guitars, or pianos, it always pays dividends to work a little harder to make sure the compression sounds natural while still achieving the balance goals.

Great work, and I look forward to your opinions in the future!
Hello pauli!! Thank you very much for your advice. I tried to automate the gated reverbs of the drums as you mentioned and I softened a little the compressions on the lead and backing vocals. So here is my new version!
Sounds like a pretty good job ,I can't give too much advice as just downloaded the tracks had a look and not sure where to start with this one . lol
I like the intro ,the piano and vocals sound great ,maybe have some de-essing, there are some part where the vocals are being drowned out by the music especially as the song builds up towards the end Big Grin.
Thank you very much thedon! I think I have to agree with you about the de-essing!! I would tell you to give it a try if your pc can work well with all of these stuff on this song. It is a really nice song for mixing with great recorded tracks!

This gave me a laugh... I took a look at the vocal tracks and said what the fu..... Big Grin

My CPU was being mean and hateful so I had to get each set of vocals tuned and panned in a separate project before importing them into the mix. It took about 4 hours, this one is a toughy!
Haha! I know exactly what you mean!!
Nice job! I agree with Don about the lead vocal.
I'm afraid I can't agree, at least not entirely, with pauli and bmullen here. I think this mix still needs quite a lot of work, particularly those vocals. They don't sound like they have any low frequency definition at all, as if they've been passed through a highpass filter set to roll off everything below 500 Hz, and the mids are way too far forward, creating kind of an AM radio sound to them. The whole mix is actually a little on the bright side for my taste, to be honest, and the vocals are getting lost totally in the latter half of the song (though my colleagues above already pointed that one out Tongue).

Now on the plus side, dialling back on the reverbs was definitely the right choice. In your first mix the reverbs clashed so badly I couldn't make out most of what was going on; now there's a lot more definition and it sounds a lot better. Also, I must admit you got the drums sounding better than I did on my first attempt so while most of the rest of the mix is a bit too bright the drums, to my ears, sound spot on as they are.

This mix definitely has potential. Nice overall balance, if a little cluttered, and nice drum sound.
I agree with John about the mix. I think it's too bright and even though you can hear the bass and kick, there's some low frequencies missing in the overall sound.
