Hi,

I'm still fairly new here, but I might just start the conversation, because I'm working on that one as well at the moment. Smile I haven't posted much yet, and I'm no authority when it comes to mixing. But maybe it helps.

I actually really like your sax sound. I was struggling a bit to get it to sound right.

Your main vocals sound pretty neat as well. They might just need a little bit more depth in sense of reverb and/or delay. They feel a little "decoupled" from the rest. Also there is this plosive right in the beginning of the song, that you should look after.

Now my criticism... I find, that there is too much low-end overall. I was listening on my system with a sub and I just wasn't getting a tight response. I know it's a live recording and there is a lot of ambience. But a good amount of high-passing on anything but the kick might bring a lot of clarity to the mix. Even the bass can take it up to like 60Hz imho (as far as I was going with it in my attempt). Especially the toms seem to be a little muddy when they hit.

Hope that helps. Smile
As I said, I'm no authority. But I'm going to upload my version just now. Maybe we can have a discussion. Wink

Cheers, Stefan

Hi thanks for the listen i did it on my laptop only...kinda quick just to get it out
ill take a listen on some reg speakers hard to judge the low end on these although apple comp speakers have come a long way. Ill also check the beginning and upload a revision. Yea cool upload your mix ill check it out and give some feedback

Thanks again
Well that might be the problem. Mixing on laptop speakers isn't actually a very good idea. There is virtually no low-end on those. And the mids are normally pretty cluttered.
Under my upload, you've been asking what set of speakers I use. I'm mixing on 5" Adams with a sub. But really, any kind of decent studio monitor will do. And you don't have to spend a fortune. There are some pretty cool ones made by PreSonus or JBL.
Also, a good set of headphones (AKG K712 or Beyer DT990 i.e.) would be a step up from the laptop speakers as well. Mixing on headphones can be a bit difficult, but you can get used to it. Andrew Sheps mixes on a set of Sony 7506's a lot.
Anyway, none of those are really going to address the low-end in all depth. I was avoiding to mix with a sub for years, but when I finally made the switch, it meant everything.

Hope that helps. I'm sounding like a salesman...

Hi i was at my girlfriends house so just had a laptop with me i just did a quick mix to get it out...i own a full studio. My monitors are dynaudio bm15a with sub, presonus eris 4.5 original auratone 5c with parasound a21 amplifier...plus a bunch of analog gear...had diff sets of monitors from barefoot, spiral groove, amphion, ns10, etc. I also check on apple ear buds on occasion

I did an update thru speakers and some analog. vocals could still use some taming plus sax a bit but was in a rush might update again

thanks for your feedback much appreciated
Okay, now I got what you were initially saying. Sorry, didn't mean to undersell your setup Wink
V2 is obviously better. Nicely warm and tubby. I like the balance. Snare might be a tad too loud.

But it's a mix I really can enjoy!

Yes, the sax might be a bit loud at times. Not overall, but sometimes there is a lot of airflow coming through. And that's when it starts sounding a little resonant in the upper mids.

Another thing, 'cause you've been asking about my setup. Yes, I use A5X's and a 10" sub from Presonus, as mentioned before. But I also calibrated my room and setup with Sonarworks Reference 4. Highly recommended.

Again, nice mix!

Yea i have sonarworks 4 haven't calibrated my room recently though since i moved have to get around to it. My room sounds decent with the acoustic treatment but i will eventually get to it also have arc 2.5. Nice monitor setup btw.

Thanks for the listen i might fine tune later thought id clear up my laptop mixing statement lol no worries
Listening to mix 2. I like the vocals and the guitars. The sax, not so much. It feels a bit naked and stark at times. The issue I think everyone will find with sax is how his sound changes when he goes to the upper register. I do like the added effects during his solo. That is cool and helps place it better. In the versus and choruses though those effects get lost leaving it a bit naked. The snare also feels a bit naked and stark as well but comes into its own as the song progresses. You've established good energy through the song. I like that a lot. Your bass is much more utilitarian than mine. I played around a lot more with his figures and tones and effects. However, it blends well with the kick. The two get a bit heavy at times and some definition is lost. Still it has a great holistic feel and holds great energy. Well done.

Thanks for the listen. Yea after i listened back felt the sax could have been honed in on more... and yea maybe ill automate the fx on the verse parts cause it does get buried..the snare was left dry can def use some fx whether it be a plate or room verb. I might fine tune it a bit and repost

Thanks again for the feedback
