My Mix

Hard panned Guitar and synth tracks to try to open up the vocal and bass and give the instruments a more defined sound. I originally soft panned and it just sounded too cluttered to me. Automated the drums. I only tuned the vocal slightly and automated, I didn't want to destroy the unique character of her voice. Placed the 3 basses center and Eq'ed and compressed them on one group. Master bus has EQ and Limiter for volume. 11 LUFS.

Ver. 2

Tried some of Dave's suggestions and experimented, moved the synth keys in toward center and widened them. The Guitar track I panned the mono track slightly Left and ran it to a stereo buss and squashed it, then to a Reverb Aux buss and panned it Right to get some ambience on the Right side. The guitar is tough because all the Fx's are printed and he's using a synth pedal and its a mono track.

Hi Kirk,

Nice take! Mix is sounding great through the headphones. I like the panned guitar parts and their play offs combined with the mono-ed up drums. Just a couple of thoughts while listening though. First, would the synth part work better more centred behind the vox and possibly even stereo-ized a bit. I think this may help to keep the left guitar part defined. I think the right panned guitar could be raise in volume at times throughout also just for balance against the left part. The mix is a little weighted to the left as it is. Finally would the solo guitar part work better front and centre just for it's duration? Anyway, just some things to think about K. Have you ever played with crossed panned reverbs with guitars? This could be a good track to experiment with.

Your the No1 contributor to this site at the moment Kirk, so well done for that, and keep it up. It's efforts like this that makes this place work!Big Grin

Hey Dave
Thanks for the input
This is a tough one for me, I love my hard panningTongue but with just the one mono guitar w/printed effects running a synth pedal of some sort, your right, I think spreading it out more and getting some of it on the Right side might be the thing to try and moving the synth piano in towards the vocal should balance it a lot more. Those 2 tracks are basically it as far as creating some kind of stereo Illusion. If I spread the 3 bass tracks out it gets messy.

Don't know what to say about the contributing thing, except thanks, but I have to say, I've learned so much from you and everyone else here.

version 2 is up, let me know what you think, is it getting closer? maybe automate the guitar volume when the lead part comes in?

I haven't worked on this piece, so I'm not quite sure what it is you have to work with. The synth part I was thinking of centring is obviously the one that is part of the guitar track. My Bad! Based on this It may be good to go somewhere in between Version 1 & 2 as far as the panning goes. I do miss the space of the first mix but like the guitar ambience you have created in the right ear with the second mix. You might be able to get away with emphasising this a little more if you wanted as you try moving the guitar further left. A similar crossed panned verb may work for the actual synth part also. What are your thoughts of the mix overall? Just throwing some ideas around. Sorry for the bum steer.

Hey Dave
No problem, a lot of good Ideas. I figured Id try one more, the description is up top of a few things I did.
Thanks for all the help, hopefully this works a bit better for balance.

What's up, KirK? For me, v2 is the one right from the start. It just gets me more into the tune. Panning the bass works fine thru the 0:40 parts when they do that funny change, but for the bulk of the verse, it makes things smaller and more like "live tv mix" than "album mix". On the other hand, v2 might have a little too much "ooomp?" and vocal needs some riding and more polish already present in v3. Right side reverb could have a little too presence, too.

I understand that you didn't touch drums from v2 to v3, so they sound different just becaouse of the bass being panned? I like the darker and fatter tone of the drums in v2. Makes them sit better behind the vocal. If you're glad with the bass panning, I guess some EQ could help to match the drum tone from v2 to v3.

If all that sonic onslaught is coming from one guitar with effects on tape, as it seems to be the case, I just have to take off my hat... maaaybe some dynamic EQ triggered from the voice could help with those moments when the feedback delay (0:32 or 1:00, for example) gets really earbleeding.

You should send this to Siouxie, she'd love it!

Hi Deliza
Yeah, the guitar track is brutal. Thinking about it now, maybe chopping up the track and treating each part separately might be the most controllable way to handle it.

Great Ideas Deliza, on the next run at this, Ill try your suggestions.

LOL! I think your right, this would be right in Siouxie's wheelhouseTongue

Thanks for having a listen and commenting, its always appreciated
