Really enjoy this modern disco funkaliciousness. The synths and keys remind me of the legendary Mike Boddicker.

Definitely a new genre for me mixing wise, so some feedback would be great before I go mixing in circles. lol

Mix 2 update: Made some tweaks based on DangerousDave's observations. Much happier with the intro, did a lot of work to the strings (editing, automation) to tighten them up and make them move with the groove, paid more attention to the instruments that my first mix put too under everything else, Pultec trick on master to clean up low mids.

Mix 3: Pulled back the clicks some more, a little more attenuation with the Pultec (well, the Ignite Amps freebie) since that seemed to be a step in the right direction and seemed a little muddy still to me.

Added a -14lufs version. Sure does make for a pretty waveform! The other version is fairly loud, so just be expecting it if you go from one to the other.
Hi TNS,

I like this a lot. A big sounding energetic mix that translates to my headphones well. Good stereo spread and overall processing. Bass sounds great but maybe a little full sounding overall. I like the intro build but think the clicks prior to the snare starting in the first verse could come up in intensity just for balance with the kick and then for the transition to the snare that takes place. Otherwise TNS, I like what I hear. An enjoyable listen.

Hi Dave, thanks and I agree. The intro is a bit of a mess and rather than building up so much, it should probably just smack you in the face and relax into the song. I panned the bass a little off center to try and give it some space, but first impression this morning sounded weird and lopsided, so back to center it goes! I'll post a new mix later with what I hope to be improvements.

Any suggestions on how to tighten up the strings? I feel like I want to line them up and do some automation so they don't sound so flat and to get more of a "digging in" sound on the accents, if that makes sense.
Mix 2 update up!
Hey TNS

Translated well to the studio monitors. Very nice instrument dynamics and separation, also nice balance. The work you did on the strings definitely shows. Only one thing stood out to me .. the finger snaps at the beginning are a bit loud. I think pull those back into the mix and you've got a really great mix of this song.
Well Done!!

Cheers

Thanks Kirk. I pulled them back to be more in line with the snare when it comes in (probably what Dave was trying to get through when he said bring em up in the first version). You know how it goes...I had added some delay to make them sloppier and then went full commando on the levels ha
Bottom end sounds tighter and more defined in your second pass TNS. As Kirk mentioned you may have overcooked the clicks at the start, although I do like the direction they have taken here. Maybe back down a dB or 2. The mix really translates well to my Laptop speakers and iphone which is a big bonus and something I look for in my own mixes. Well done.

Thanks Dave! I pulled them back some more....again haha. I also did a little more Pultec attenuation since I was still hearing some woof. When you mentioned earlier that the bass was too full, I originally thought width since I have some Tal-Chorus on it. Then I went and listened to some Uptown Funk. When I came back, it was clear what you meant!

Thanks Kirk and Dave for the listens and suggestions. Really helped!

Mix 3 up.

Added a -14lufs version so people have a choice. At least the meter in Unlimited (using it just for the metering) is showing it floating around there, but not sure how accurate. Sounds about right, though, and really does wonders for the waveform.
