Hello! Long time since I give a try on a mix from here, and I was glad to find this song, until I began with the vocals.

Please let me know your opinions on this attemp, I felt quite confident having my groove but when coming to vocals I keep having lots of doubts, are they too upfront, are they clear, are they too dry, too wet.

I´ll welcome any advice! Thanks![/font]
Hey Matias, you have the elements to a good mix here. Here's my comments/suggestions:

1. There is some low-end rumble that appears to be pushed really wide in the mix (did you use a stereo widener?). It's quite overbearing.
2. The kick needs to punch a bit harder.
3. The vocals are very one-dimensional and are mostly drowned out in the mix. However, in some sections they are louder than others.
4. I really like the reverb approach to the break-down section on the guitars. Get the vocals to balance in this section and it will be even better.
5. I would ease up on the limiting on your master buss. It's on the brink of being too squashed. Perhaps try some parallel compression to bring up the level which might reduce the need for aggressive limiting.
6. Also, I would like to hear a bit of sparkle on the top-end, but that's just a preference of mine.

Cheers,
Mike
Thank you very much mick2015.

I think I only used a stereo widener on the guitar buss and on the backing vocals buss. I will look for that rumble you say.
Any tips on the vocals for getting rid of that one-dimensionality? I didn´t automate any levels on the mix, I think that would help with the drowning-louder parts, but I really don´t know how to give dimension to the vocals.
Never tried parallel compression on the master bus, I´ll definitely try it now.
Last, I thought it was too much sparkle on the top end, glad to hear I was wrong Haha:

Thanks! I will send a new mix when possible.
Hey

Nice intro Smile

The only problem I hear here is the bass... It's too loud.. you should knock it down a couple of DB maybe 3. This will fix many issues on Mick's comment. Everything else is well balanced.. don't touch anything just drop the bass level.

As for the vocals I don't know what 1dimensional means.. I like them.. sure a bit of inconsistencies in volume that could be fixed with automation but that's it. They sound good to my ears.

P.s. im listening in my car stereo.. I will give it another go in my monitors later.. still though.. I'm confident of my comment.

Keep it up. It's a great start.
Thanks Shul, I´ll check out the bass. I was using a Periphery track as reference and trying to level that bass like that, but I may have gone too far.

Which one?
Can´t remember now, surely something like Feed The Ground . And also a couple songs from Earthside, Dream in Static I guess
I definitely agree with the bass comments. Like Shul said, just pulling it down will work wonders. Three more things though!

1) Something that bothered me about the recording of this song is that the vocals are so light and feathery. Like they recorded with an extreme high pass filter in place. Maybe that's where the "one-dimensionalness" (dimensionality??) comes from? How did you EQ the vocals? Maybe taking out some of the high mids or adding some lower stuff could help him sound less ghostly (get it???).

2) The synth sounds at the beginning sound pretty harsh. Did anyone else think this? Something around 2-5 kHz? Hell I don't know, I'm having a hard time fitting them in myself!

3) I do not like how pushed back the yelled vocals are. The dude's pissed off and wants to be heard. Let him!

I also agree with Shul that you have a great start. I also think it's cool that you've done some creative mixing, especially with the guitars in the very beginning and the soft section.
Thanks CrackheadBill!

I couldn´t mix this song again, my project went crazy, a couple plugins stopped working and makes Cubase shut down every minute when I open this project so I said goodbye Haha. But thanks for the advice on the low end! 1) Is also very smart thought, I could have tried that. 2) Can´t remember now and 3) I think it´s a matter of taste, I just took a decision and tried that. would have been awesome having more takes on that part, recorded far away. but I know, what you ask for is what is expected to be, so may be more effective.
