I'm new here and I am a total noob at this. I post this with great hesitation as it is my first time. Undecided I love music. I'm a 46 year old disabled Veteran and I picked this up as a hobby to keep me busy and to play my guitar with a "backing band." Please be gentle Smile

This song is interesting and that's why I attempted it. I can hear a lot of influences from music and group I grew up with.

I use SONAR Producer and I have to say. I now know why it takes artist(s) so long to make a CD. (Almost said album Blush)

Here is my take albeit amateur hour. Thanks in advance for any help and listening.
Hi John welcome to the forum
Well you know how to pick em as this a hard track to mix for a noob.
Now your mix is very bottom heavy with a lot of reverb on the mix.
Maybe have another go and go very easy on reverb so you can hear more
clear as to what is going on in the mix.
If you listen to your mix you will notice that the snare drum as an example
is lost all together.I think you should maybe have a listen to some of the other mixes of this
and compare with your mix and you should see where i am coming from.
Also i would recomend Mike Seniors book as it is very good and you can have a good read up.
I also think it would be a good idea for you to visit youtube and watch some vids that cover eq
and study that a bit beacause its so important to understand eq to get the sound of your mixes
on track.I think you should also pick a more simple track for starters to be honest.
If you search impossible colours you will find songs as small as 3 or 4 tracks that would be good for you
to practice your eq and balance on etc.
Please dont be dis heartend by what i have said because in 3 months you will be mixing like a pro.
Practice,research,practice,research
Greetings and welcome!

This really is a tricky song to start with - listening to mixes done by other people it sounds like it should be fairly straightforward...until you load the tracks and press 'play' Smile Smile
Well done on persisting with it to get to this point!

As Takka says the mix is very bottom-heavy and kind of 'muffled'. There's also something funky going on with compression or oversaturation distortion whenever the kick is present.
This may also be partially due to the bit rate of the mp3 (if you are able to, bounce the mix at a minimum of 224kbps so there isn't as much downgrading of the audio)
What are you using to monitor your songs on, John?
I'm wondering if using small speakers or ear buds to mix may be giving you an inaccurate sense of where things are sitting.
If you have the ability to listen to the song though a variety of different monitoring systems (studio headphones, speakers, small headphones) this will give you a better idea of how the mix sounds as it will prevent your ears from being accustomed to just one point of view.

Stick with it, my friend! It is a tricky learning curve, but it is an enjoyable one Smile
The best thing I can recommend is exactly what Takka also mentions - delve into as much reading and referencing as you can. Whenever you want to know about something, check out what a google search turns up. I am amazed at how much there is out there in w3 land.

And, of course, we're here to help as well!

I really appreciate both of your replies. I will be picking up Mike's book at the beginning of July but I will start on smaller projects. Song is a great song and I can't believe it hasn't been more"mainstream" if you will. Maybe it has been and I'm unaware.

What was supposed to be making music with a BOSS BR-800 has turned into a hobby/addiction. I will be getting some either studio monitors or some very good closed head phones.

When I was a teenager (seems like a lifetime ago), I wanted to go to The Recording Workshop in Chilocothe Ohio. It's an hour from where I am located. I am amazed at the technology today. A lot more than the commodore 64 I made a set of keys with.

A lot to read and learn. I have nothing but time now. I will enjoy this.

Thanks.

And I will have another go at it Smile
