O.K., anyone who thinks this wouldn't be a challenge was wrong....lol. This song just kept me at the computer working on it and working on it. I really wanted to make the vocal crisp and up front but I'm not a fan of mic noises, clicks, pops, overly noticeable sibliance, ambient noises on tracks, etc. These tracks were nice but did have a lot of stuff that had to be cleaned up. And, like some of you, I used manual automation and manipulation (but also used some plugins) on the lead vocal. I understand that on professional vocals they may spend a week working on them! At least I read that somewhere, can remember where. Trying to compete with pro mixes is a hard darned thing, is it not? Anyway, I hope my hard work payed off. I'm happy with this mix and I hope ya'll are too. Feedback always welcomed.

nice mix! vocals sound really good but i just want to mention that in my opinion you took the de-essing too far, especially on the s'ss. i'll be posting a version soon, and i'll be going for a crisp and upfront vocal as well. planning to manually micro-manage the mainvox toworrow (in this case: fun!) and to use as little processing on them as possible though. it might be interesting to compare.
Real Nice Tom,

I really like the vocal, soft, airy and close. I think your efforts have paid off, I heard no noticeable distractions whist focusing in on the performance.

I also enjoyed the space and controlled ambience surrounding the whole piece. It certainly painted a realistic picture of the performance in my mind as I listened.

Loupi,

Thanks for your input. I'm looking forward to hearing your mix. To my ears the "esses" sound ok to me. But, you could be right. You see, when I was young I could hear well above 16k and now that's just about my limit nowadays. So, I have to be careful not to overdrive high frequencies. The high frequency content is there in the vocal. In fact it almost sounds too "processed" even though there is almost no processing on it. The singer sang right into that mic which makes for a hard time controlling rogue sounds, frequencies, breathing and other noises. I spent a lot of time with manual wav adjustments and only used a bit of WAVES vocal rider. Let me know when you post your version. :-)

Later,

Tom

Hey D man, how are you? Thanks for the props. Actually, listening to my mix again, the vocal sounds too processed to me. It's incredible because I used almost no processing on it. I mean, I manually manipulated the wav form for sibilance and other noises, etc., and only used a bit of Waves Vocal Rider on the track. Perhaps THAT was even too much because the singer sang very close to the mic and any volume increase that the vocal rider was producing, I think, only made the vocal's noisy areas even more pronounced. So, I think I just made more work for myself. LOL! But overall it's not a bad mix. Are you going to post your own? I haven't seen it. Please let me know if you do this one. It's challenging.

Peace....

Tom

Like it very much.
Only the bass or the lack of the natural bass is bothering me a bit. It sounds too much like a DI-mic.
But otherwise I have nothing to complain. Very well done!

Olli,

Thanks. Yeah, the bass is there, but I think I put too much processing in the high end of the bass....did use the tracks. I'll have to take another listen and maybe repost another, hopefully better mix.
