Tough mix

For the first mix I used Neutron and this was the first time I've used this plugin and overall I can see a lot of benefits as far as channel strip goes.

I would not use this plugin as a go too or even across the board for that matter.

The strength of this plugin is that it uses marginal cpu and you can make adjustments to two tracks at once.

The downfall is that it seems to stifle dynamics when used on every channel and everything starts to sound homogeneous.

The track assistant is great but not a go to, but for when you just want a second opinion.

I am not happy with my mix what so ever and I am not sure if I could even do any better, but I'm not willing to spend the time figuring that out. (OR SO I THOUGHT)

Still Flying has beat me down. Good song but it seems like ten tons of stuff in a five pound bag. Also, the fact that I had to adjust the timing of the guitars and automate the hell out of the vocals and everything else made for an arduous mixing experience. I was often wondering is having all of the extra ambient tracks even beneficial to the song, but its not my song to pick and choose what I think should be there.

On the second mix, I got rid of Nuetron and used Softube C1 and did a few things differently. I have to say I'm glad I did, because the mix is much better than my first miserable attempt.

On mix 3 I adjusted the overall levels on certain things, low pass shelving on the synth trks and added a few fades on reverb tails and what not. I also added Satin to the master buss and used Izotopes Maximiser. I hope

Cheers.
Good Work Brother.

Nice overall tonal balance and instrument definition/separation.

Only thing I can think of suggestion wise is maybe a bit of high shelf type treatment to the instruments which will fall on the sides of stereo field.......will probably open the mix up a bit more and will still sound fat as you have a solid low and mid freq. foundation.

nice job.

Thanks, I will give that a shot and see if it will improve the mix.
yes, this mix was quite a challenge, the production-overload, the misplaced tracks...! think you did great. only remarks: there seems to be quite some seperation between mid and sides (i guess to keep the guitars on the sides clear). i personally feel the gap is too wide (perhaps too much widening?). and concerning the editing and picking and choosing: i think if you feel a heavy rock song benefits from cutting away some wimpy and cheap sounding piano (fe.) you should (i did). (guess i took giving us misplaced guitartracks as an invitation to be creative ;-)

This was a challenge, but a manageable challenge in the long run. I think that I need to step away from this song for a while and come back to it at a later date. By then I should be able to re-evaluate and make the appropriate changes. As of right now I think my judgement is a bit unreliable.

Just listened to your last mix and it sounds good to me. Well done! Good punch in the song and levels sems to be perfect.

Well that's cool, thanks. I feel fairly good about this mix but I also want it to be better because no matter what every mix can be better.
