There were two keys to the drama of this track that I tried to concentrate on: the break between the intro and first verse, and the outro chorus. It's a great recording, which made it easy to work with. There wasn't any serious remediation needed on any of the tracks.

Master buss on mixdown included a touch of tape saturation, and less than 3db of soft knee compression.

The mastering chain included some very slight EQ tweaks, followed by Vlad's excellent Limiter #6, using *very* light compression and limiting.

Nice work Bill! Big Grin

Hi ulynch,

You've done a good mix. I liked how you've treat the intro.
I think your mix could be brighter, with adding a shelf starting 8khz.

Thanks for the comment Fabien Smile. I intentionally limited the high end of the track with the goal of sticking to something of a vintage vibe. I didn't want it sounding too hi-fi. Some of the high end that was in the mix was softened by the tape emulator (in this case, Tone Boosters' Ferox).
Ok, I understand, but if you listen songs like "Whole lotta love", the drums are bright (snare and hi hat). I still beleave that your mix is a bit dark.
