Hi, this is my second mix of this band, the first song you can find it at http://discussion.cambridge-mt.com/showt...?tid=11393 , any comment about two mixes and tell me which has better balance to this genre.

Thanks any comment

The 02 version is based on recommendations of dcp10200 user, thank for your goods comments.
Hi Carlos, the balance of your mix is good all the instruments in your mix can be heard clearly, good job. The only real problems with the mix seems to be the guitars and and the drums. The guitars have a very sandy, oversaturated tone to them and they get lost in the mix at times especially when they are playing the chugging patterns in the riffs. I would suggest using the DI files and reamp them with lower gain settings through a guitar amp plugin or send them out from your interface to a guitar amp. The drums seem to be a touch over compressed making them lose some definition and making the cymbals sound splatty. Using less compression on your drums and blending in some parallel compression to taste will really help your drums cut through the mix. The bass guitar in the mix sounds really nice and heavy, I really like how it growls during the parts where the guitars kick in. Overall the mix has a solid low end! If you want a reference mix to help you with this track, i would suggest giving a listen to "Slave" by the band Counterparts, this is the link to the track, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BF4ii53NfAQ, really focus on the guitar tone and the drums in the song and build your mix off of that. Overall good job with the mix and cheers! Smile
Hi thank for your complete comment, very appreciated, I have a question, I listen Slave and found the mix more clear, less low frequencys and the guitars with midhi and less low and mid low.
This change too much my mix concept of this genre. Finally, my question is, if I use this preset of guitars and only put some hi frequencys will achieve the sound that you talk to me?. With the drum you are all right, I had hard compression on over head.

A soon as possible I comment your mixes.
Hi Carlos, glad to hear that you liked the critique. Adding more upper mids to your tone might help but it would be wise to lower the gain on your preset as well. The tone at this point has alot of distortion and adding upper mids can bring out more harshness in the distortion, also since the bass has a very solid low end and doubles the guitar for most of the song, you can afford to lose some low mids and bass in the guitar to have a bit more separation of the instruments in the mix. I listened to your track compared to slave and came to the same conclusion that you did, it is quite abit different sonically from your mix, I did however find a mix that might be more in your direction, hundereth's Unravel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2mGVSv28DD0. Hope this helps, and thanks in advance for giving my mix a listen.
Your new mix is really sounding good, the guitars are really crisp and clear and the cymbals are less washy and compressed. In the verses the guitars need to come down abit and the kick needs a touch more click around 4k. The toms sound killer, really fat and powerful. The snare for the most part sounds good but gets lost in the heavier sections, a bit more compression and a little eq in the top end will really help it. The bass is reminding me of the Counterparts track, thick, growly, and tight. Overall the mix sounds like a record, great job! Smile
Sounds good! I think the first mix sounds better overall. I like the guitars, but I think if you cut back in the upper frequencies of the hi-hat and cymbals, it would allow the guitars to cut through in the mix. Smile
Thanks for comments, a soon as possible I make this changes hope new comments.

This are some pictures of plugins used on Bass tracks
For me its definitly your second version. Nice mix overall! 2 things came to my ears when listening. First, i got the feeling that the hi-hat (panned about half-left in your mix) doesnt match the location of the hi-hat on the overheads track, producing some wierd phase effects. might not be the panning but some difference in phase between the overhead mics and the close mic of the hi-hat, hard to tell. 2nd thing is sth rather personal. For me the Reverb on the vocals is too obvious, especially in the breaks, when there is room in the arrangement. maybe use some automation to reduce the volume of your FX return. But maybe thats exactly the effect you wanted to achieve and its just me :p i like the balance between your guitars and the vocals a lot! Most people tend to mix the vocals too loud which makes the band sound small and weakish (especially in heavier rock music) Big Grin your vocal is sitting in the mix nicely!

Edit: After listening again focusing on the hihat, i am 90% sure that the hihat is sitting at about 50% right side on the overheads track, while the hihat track itself is panned to about 50% left, which seems to produce some irritating effects.
