What Is This Thing
#1
I thought the tracks were recorded well but I didn’t care for the background vocalizing.

I used bass/piano/drums, left-to-right panning. The bass is 40% left. The piano is centered and narrowed to 35L/35R. I didn’t hear either side of the piano track as distinctly low or high strings but the right channel seemed stronger, like a right hand. I wanted this panning to represent the pianist’s right shoulder & back being toward the audience. The piano is routed to two aux tracks. One has Bittersweet to increase the attack and the other has high compression to increase sustain. Volume is automated during the bass solo.

The drummer is panned to the right of the piano. I swapped the overheads left-for-right and panned them 10R/50R to put the high-hat on the right and get audience perspective for a right-handed drummer. I reversed phase on the snare and dropped the inside kick.

I used light compression plus a room reverb on most tracks.
