Amy Helm & The Handsome Strangers: 'Rescue Me' - CK
#1
Not happy with this one, mainly the solo and mandolin...

any ideas on the mandolin or feedback? I know i kinda buried it.

I kinda felt a church vibe with this, kinda what I went for.

Oh and the guitar is run through a virtal amp with dotted 8th notes (echoboy).
(I mixed this in Pro Tools 10 and mastered in Logic Pro X)

Ps, enjoying the forum, we all hear things so different, awesome.

Mando is really tough in this song. Dynamics are all over the place and getting it lay against the very powerful guitar (with its embedded effects) is a tough get. I used compression in several stages and limiting on mine. An API 550B helped with the EQ.
The bleed into the vocal mics is another significant challenge so the effects and eq and compression on those can have a serious effect on the ensemble sound. Trimming the tracks just makes those issue even more prevalent.

Your mix is very mono. Would like to hear more top end in the mastering.

I think you've done a good job on this tough mix.

Yeah I agree, very mono, I should bring this up and hit a mix two. I'll add some top end and see if I can spread things out.

Edit: Just changed the mix. Hmmm, think it's even more mono, better or worse?

Thanks for the kind words and tips! CK
