The mix problem, for the most part, was with the glorious bleed of the cymbals in the snare track, in particular, the hi hat, which is is overwhelming in this case. This has been touched on in many previous posts.
The approach I took was two fold. First was to surgically cut up a copy of the snare track, removing all of the cymbal hits, which also removed the snare tail, which a touch of reverb restored. Second was to use a combination of expansion and compression on a separate copy of the complete snare track to bring out the snare and lower the cymbals, which are sufficiently present in the overhead and room tracks. The two were mixed so that one approach does not dominate.
