Absolutely - eq'ing and compressing tracks without even listening to them in the first place is a big problem and I hear too many mixes on this forum where people do way too much.

"How many mixes of your songs have you listened to where they didn't pay one bit of attention to your track notes and they compress and eq the hell out of the guitars? Just because they think they have to add a eq without having a specific reason why."

I totally agree with everything you wrote, especially if you mix lots of different styles. Only use an EQ when and where it is needed, only use compression when/if it is needed. But for this kind of music, limiting and clipping individual tracks are a must if you want the huge wall of sound that modern metal is known for.
