Painted Skies (First take on this)
I downloaded the tracks but the bass didn't come with the pack.
Can anyone confirm If my download was wrong? or if indeed there is no bass in the tracks?

Thank you.

UPDATE-------------

Well after re downloading the tracks and finally getting to work on this, it took me pretty much all day to come up with this.

A heads up for everybody here.. this is not an easy mix. IS NOT.

Replace Kick and toms. Added snare sample to support original snare.
Limiter was my friend on this one.
I fix several kick hits but when the fills of toms come it it doesn't sound very good. I have to fix the toms to match the kick but I'm done for the day and night... spent about 6 long hours in this.

Let me know what you think and hopefully you get to mix this soon. I'm interested in finding out what everyone comes up with.

And the Top Snare mic isn't there

Mixing is way more art and soul than science. We don’t really know what we’re doing. We do it because we love music! It’s the love of music first. Eddie Kramer

RE: Help (BassTrack is Missing)
Hi everyone,

Well spotted! Just checking you were awake... Smile

But seriously: sincere apologies to you all (and indeed the band!) for the goof on my part. I've just uploaded corrected ZIPs, so if you just redownload it should now all be sorted. If not, do let me know! (Thanks Dirk for heads-up!)

I've listen to the tracks.... and decided not to spend time on this one... Drums are absolutely not in place and vocals are totally out of tune !

To me, it's a non sense to try to mix this. The band should have used programmed drums, and spend more time to get better vocals. The "fix in the mix" definitively won't work here.

About your mix Shul, I think you can be way more agressive to get a more "in your face" sound, especially the guitars which sound very distant.

I can hear you tried to fix the kick as much as you can, but still.... not listenable for me (not your fault at all ! )

RE: Painted Skies (First take on this)
To be fair, part of practicing how to mix is how to deal with difficult mixes. Back when I was more of a professional engineer I'd often have to mix things that were less than stellar sounding. And it was often stuff I recorded!

I'd totally recommend someone who is above a newbie level to try their hand at mixing something like this and getting it up to an acceptable level. Especially if you want to be a professional mixer or recording engineer because you'll never know who walks in and what you'll get.

As far as Shul's mix I think it sounds decent. It's not radio ready but as something a local band would make I think the client would be happy with it.

I think the rhythm guitar on the right has a little too much low end and it kind of dominates that side of the image. Maybe consider swapping the pan of the rhythms so it's on the left and off sets things like the riffs and floor tom which are on the right as well. If that makes sense.
The vocal feels too dry which might be what the style dictates but I'd err on the side of a little more "excitement" and ear candy mostly to distract from the rest of the track. Things to get the band and listener interested and hide the warts.

I only have earbuds to listen and mix with at the moment. Take everything I say with a grain of salt.
