I usually don't let my mix get too loud. I like to save headroom for the master process. That being said, I tend to try to hit around -6 every time (a little over it its ok) Never really used limiter on a mixing process. Is it a common thing to use limiter on the mixing process? Do you have any suggestions where I can read a more about it?

For my master method, I'll do another EQ correcting things I think are still a bit too much, followed by another compressor and maybe a second EQ if I feel like doing something creative. Then I'll throw in some imager and limiter ...

You can use a lot of methods to get your mix necessary and lovely loudness. Limiter is not common thing, but it's very comfortably for me.
For example try to start with this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=170cZZQwOvA&t=208s and this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lk4D4bMu8uo.
