Hi Don!

I like your mix, it seems to me very well-balanced!
The only thing I noticed is that the drums seems to come from a different room, while the rest sound a bit distant. I find the bass, especially, a bit unfocused. Also, every first hit of the bass drum after the snare hit makes a little burst on the left channel.

Thank you very much for having a listen.
I will revisit this mix again ,with a little more practice hopefully with better results.

Thanks again.
Don

Hi there Don.

It sounds like you've made good use of the raw tracks.

I've also just re-listened to the 'Mix Rescue' version and 'Black Bloc Mixing' by Rufete.

Now you'd have to be pretty darn good to get anywhere near what Mike did with the guitars on that one (not to mention all the other apocalyptic dub stuff).

'However' :] I was a huge gang of four fan, and any gang of four fan could tell you that those dissonant BV's with spoken line (in the chorus) are pure GOF. Now Rufete used them perfectly, if you listen around 0:42

I think the perfect mix would have elements of both those mixes.

Good start though, on a pretty full on track.

Hi Don i think you are using too much room here and its making it all sound very hollow. Also i think there could be some peak distortion on the kick.

re. Gang of Four

This track off solid gold 'to hell with poverty' has some of those doubled vocals

http://youtu.be/AG-Ct21TrEU?t=41m01s

From the comments I found this:

"michael mcgrath 5 months ago

.. They influenced loads of bands including U2 and REM and Red hot chili peppers built a career around their sound, bloc party, franz ferdinand, the future heads, rapture, the list is endless, their music was a new language that shocked their contemporaries and their 1979 album 'entertainment' was oneof the most important albums in the last 30 years"

Obviously with 'If you want success' you have to also factor in more modern influences such as RATM.

Here is an early GOF example 'Outside the trains don't run on time'. Very influential. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmiwPZczUy8#

Hope you enjoy it, it has strong links to early funk like sly and the family stone or talking heads
