The Opener - First mixing attempt
#1
This is my first attempt at mixing big band jazz so grateful for any comments to help me improve.
Added some gate to the kick and snare drums. High pass filter on the overheads.
Otherwise I've tried to make volume changes to bring out certain parts in places.
Added small (to my ears) amount of reverb to guitar, trumpet, trombone and sax parts.
Finally - hopefully it sounds like the big band is blasting away in front of yourself in the audience........

Nice sounding mix m4granger. Good Balance and Arrangement. I think it may be a little too loud and over compressed on the master. I find this style of music really benefits from plenty of headroom and dynamics to allow the song to breathe naturally. The only other thing I can suggest is some global style reverb for that big concert hall sound that seems synonymous with these types of recordings. This is purely subjective and I'm far from being an expert in big band recordings, so be sure to take on board other peoples comments. Well Done.
